Expert: Weber has better chances

According to Hungarian political analyst Zoltan Kiszelly, it’s possible that Manfred Weber supported the Sargentini Report for tactical reasons, in order to increase his chances to become the Spitzenkandidat of the European People’s Party (EPP).

Kiszelly told Hungarian public channel M1 that EPP group leader Manfred Weber – who is also supported by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban – is more likely to become the conservative party family’s Spitzenkandidat next year.

The analyst reminded that of the five MEPs of the CSU, Weber was the only one to support the Sargentini Report (which criticises the rule of law in Hungary), but he knows Central Europe and Hungary better than his rival, Alexander Stubb; so it’s possible that he only supported it for tactical reasons.
