We have to make a distinction between the help provided by Hungary and the other Western countries, the Maronite Patriarch of Antioch, Bechara Boutros al-Rahi told Hungarian daily Magyar Hirlap.
He explained that Hungary makes huge efforts to make it possible for refugees to return to their homes. The government has helped to rebuild homes in Syria, churches in Lebanon and Iraq. The patriarch stressed that they are grateful to other Western countries too for helping refugees but in the long run, they are not helping the region. He said that the war has demolished their homes, but if the people don’t return to their homeland that will destroy their culture and history.
Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rahi stressed that Western countries should first help the people to return to their homes and then work on the political solution. He asked Hungary’s leaders to raise their voice in the EU, to pressure the international community to end the war in Syria. Bechara Boutros al-Rahi stressed that “Western countries that encouraged the war should now encourage peace”.
