Viktor Orban is a provocateur who dances on the edge of the knife, Martin Ehl, journalist of Czech daily Hospodarske Noviny writes, according to the Hungarian news agency MTI’s summary.
In his op-ed titled European leader Viktor Orban, Ehl reminds that four years ago Orban praised autocratic leaders like Putin and Erdogan in his speech at the Tusvanyos summer university and at the same event this year, he caused a bit of an uproar by predicting that liberal democracy is about to end and after the 2019 European elections Europe will shift towards an „illiberal Christian democracy”.
“Orbán sees the chance to fulfil a long cherished dream: he wants to be a major European leader and turn the EU into a loose association of nation states. And he welcomes the project of Steven Bannon aimed at creating a strong faction that will dismantle the achievements of European integration after the European elections. … If Orbán gets serious, Europe’s current elites will have to get moving if they want to beat him. Otherwise he really will stand a chance of turning his dream into reality,”
Ehl writes, according to EuroTopics’s summary.
