Catholicism cannot respond with a white flag to the rainbow flag, but has to come up with its own way of modernity in today’s moral chaos, according to George Weigel, Pope John Paul II’s biographer.
He told Hungarian daily Magyar Hírlap that the Catholic church must do its homework, and show a way of modernity, that frees people from the prison of consumer society. He said that the Christian tradition’s idea of freedom goes beyond the current idea of immediate fulfilment of desires, it exceeds the modern world, instead of demands it focuses on compromise, freedom of speech instead of secularist repression of opinions.
According to Weigel, “Catholic lite” doesn’t work, the church doesn’t have to be different, it has to be consequently itself.
