“We are protecting the borders and building a fence”, it’s the EU’s duty to respect our decisions, Secretary of State for EU Relations Judit Varga from the Prime Minister’s Office told Mandiner.hu in an introductory interview.
Varga explained that EU affairs are very important for the fourth Orban cabinet, this is why there are two state secretariats responsible for EU affairs at the PM’s Office. Szabolcs Takas is responsible for creating and coordinating EU policies, while her duty is to make it sure the Hungarian standpoint reaches as many stakeholders as possible.
Speaking of the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027, Varga said it’s a “political budget”, and it punishes countries who reached a good performance by properly using the EU funds, proving that they can develop by using the cohesion funds. She pointed out that the budget is giving this money to countries who have been members for a much longer time but couldn’t properly use the funds to develop their economies. “This is unfair, and creates a new division between the Southern and the Eastern member states,” she added. According to Varga, the new budget doesn’t respect the main goal of the cohesion policy: helping the less developed regions to decrease the economic differences and make the whole EU more successful.
In the interview, Varga also said that the Hungarian government has already done its job to fight illegal migration, and Western politicians are frustrated that the world around them has changed, but privately they acknowledge Viktor Orban’s policies. Regarding the possible Article 7 procedure the country, she said the situation of the rule of law is not worse in Hungary than it other members states. Varga mentioned that Judith Sargentini, the Dutch MEP responsible for the report on Hungary refused to meet her, and she also said that there are EPP members who show no solidarity with the Hungarian government.
