Szijjarto talked with Salvini

Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto talked with Matteo Salvini, the Italian interior minister on Monday evening, and told him that Hungary’s government welcomes “the Italian government’s commitment to restoring European security”.

Italy’s government has shown that Europe’s borders, including the sea border, can be protected and people smuggling can be eliminated, Tamas Menczer, a ministry spokesman, said in a statement on Szijjarto’s meeting.

The Italian government’s recent steps has shown that “migration policy in Brussels falls short”, the statement said, adding that the European Union had failed over the past three and a half years “to build up the capacity to defend Europe’s borders”.

Salvini, who heads the Northern League party, issued an order denying port to a migrant rescue boat on Saturday.
