77 university professors from 28 countries of various continents expressed their solidarity with the Hungarian Helsinki Committee calling for the immediate halting of envisaged measures to starve and strangle independent civil society in Hungary, the human rights organisation informed in a statement on Wednesday.
According to them, the “Stop Soros” legislative package – which is officially aimed at ensuring the transparency of NGOs – if accepted in its current form, “would have a devastating impact on both Hungarian civil society and on all those who can only rely on support from NGOs”.
“Strong and independent civil society organisations are as indispensable for democracy and the rule of law as strong and independent universities. If NGOs such as the Hungarian Helsinki Committee are threatened, democracy is threatened”
the statement reads.
