Ukraine’s state propaganda is “waging a campaign of lies” against Hungary, but the Hungarian government will protect the 150,000-strong ethnic Hungarian community in Transcarpathia, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Monday. Any allegation that “Hungary defends Transcarpathia Hungarians on expectations by Russia” is a “base and unacceptable lie”, he said. Szijjarto insisted that
“Ukraine has falsely suggested to the international public that Hungary’s policies concerning Transcarpathia Hungarians are determined by a third party”.
Ukraine has recently taken “a number of legislative and intimidating actions” against its Hungarian minority; it has “set free nationalist sentiments and parties, and is threatening Ukraine Hungarians with further sanctions,” Szijjarto said. Hungary has made it clear that it would not support Ukraine’s integration endeavours until the latter country provides guarantees that it would “re-introduce the rights it has taken and leave existing rights untouched,” the foreign minister added.
