Schäuble: Orban has strong legitimacy

Viktor Orban received a very significant proof of trust from the Hungarian voters in the April 8 parliamentary elections, and as “good democrats” we have to accept that, President of the Bundestag Wolfgang Schäuble told Welt am Sonntag.

According to the conservative politician, there are calls within the European People’s Party (EPP) – of which Germany’s CDU/CSU and Hungary’s ruling Fidesz-KDNP are both members -, to expel Fidesz, but as Schäuble stressed, there’s democracy within the EPP, so the members don’t have to agree with everyone on everything.

Schäuble avoided answering the question why Chancellor Angela Merkel rejected his idea to put aside the quota system in order to have a constructive dialogue with the Eastern member states.
