In a letter published by Politico, intellectuals accuse German Chancellor Angela Merkel of “enabling Hungarian anti-Semitism and undermining EU values”.
The authors criticise Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for the government’s dominance over the media, attacking NGOs and independent academic institutions, and even fanning the flames of anti-Semitism with the billboard campaign against George Soros.
“Leading political scientists are convinced that the survival of Hungarian democracy is now acutely imperiled; some even believe that it has already been effectively dismantled. And yet, you as German chancellor have so far failed to condemn either Orban’s anti-Semitic rhetoric or his concerted attacks on democratic institutions,”
the letter reads, adding that “this silence makes you complicit. Your inaction has effectively made you an ally to anti-democratic and anti-Semitic forces”.
The authors call on Merkel to condemn Orban’s policies and expel Fidesz from the European People’s Party.
