Orban: The European Union belongs to Europeans and European citizens

“The European Union belongs to Europeans and European citizens,” Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in a video message ahead of an EU summit in Brussels on Friday.

Concerning the summit, Orban said that it would focus on internal changes to the community’s structure, and said that some of the proposed changes were “quite absurd”. He mentioned a suggestion, for example, that not only the number of European citizens but also migrants should be counted when distributing seats in the European Parliament, and called the idea “unacceptable”.

Referring to the migration crisis, Orban said that it was time to start meaningful talks about funds spent on border control. He said that his government had spent over one billion euros on protecting the Schengen borders and demanded that the EU should reimburse “at least half” of that total. He argued that Hungary’s borders also protect the whole community.

Orban said he would propose increasing the weight of national parliaments within the community, giving them the authority to terminate debates at the European level once those discussions harm national interests.
