The mechanism proposed by the liberal ALDR group would ensure that democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights are equally monitored in all member states, so no government can say that the EU is picking on them, Dutch MEP Sophie in ‘t Veld told Hungarian daily Magyar Hirlap.
According to the politician, Viktor Orban’s argument is rather weak, because Hungary’s prime minister is always pointing to the mistakes others make, when he’s being criticised. She added that contrary to what Orban thinks, this is not just a matter of national sovereignty.
Regarding the report, being prepared by Dutch Green MEP Judith Sargentini, in ‘t Veld said the conclusion that the Article 7 might be triggered because of the situation in Hungary was already made my the plenary last May, the report’s aim is to present evidence. She stressed that a dialogue with Hungary is possible in theory, but the Orban government is using migration for campaign purposes, “and this is disgusting”. In ‘t Veld said “we have no reason to think that the majority of Hungarians are less hospitable than others in the EU”.
