One of the biggest crimes of the “Orban regime” is eliminating media pluralism, expropriating the Hungarian media market, suppressing and misleading the public, socialist MEP Istvan Ujhelyi wrote in an op-ed for Hungarian daily Nepszava.
Ujhelyi compared this method to “Putin-like half-dictatorships”. According to the politician, several independent European reports concluded that Hungarian media freedom and pluralism suffered serious harm. Ujhelyi accused the Hungarian public media of spreading fake news, and the pro-government media of exclusively picturing “Fidesz’s alternative reality”.
The socialist politician concluded that the media situation is jeopardising the clean conduct of the parliamentary elections.
