The ruling Fidesz party’s leading figures are dominating a recent popularity list conducted by the Iranytu Institute for Hungarian daily Magyar Nemzet.
According to the list, Hungary’s most popular politician is Mihaly Varga, the Minister of National Economy (60 points of 100), followed by President Janos Ader (59 points), Prime Minister Viktor Orban (55 points) and Commissioner Tibor Navracsics (53 points). Varga and Navracsics, on the other hand, are by far less known than Ader and Orban. Navracsics is followed by Budapest Mayor Istvan Tarlos (52 points) and former socialist Foreign Minister Peter Balazs, whose name came up a few weeks ago as a possible PM candidate for the left.
The most popular – active – opposition politician is still Gergely Karacsony, Mayor of Budapest’s 14th district and head of the Dialogue (Parbeszed) party, who is the new PM candidate of his own party and the socialists (MSZP). The poll was conducted before Karacsony announced his candidacy. Green LMP party’s candidate Bernadett Szel has 48 points, while Jobbik chairman and PM candidate Gabor Vona 40 points. According to the poll, 78 % of the people knew who Szel is, but 94% knew who Vona is.
Former socialist PM Ferenc Gyurcsany reached 26 points, and the least popular politician is Florian Farkas, President of the Lungo Drom party and former head of the National Roma Council, who only got 22 points.
