Hungary welcomed Syrian refugees

The Hungarian government opposes the European Union’s mandatory relocation scheme, but the country participates in the United Nation’s resettlement programme.

The UNHCR’s spokesman in Hungary, Erno Simon told Hungarian daily Magyar Nemzet that over the past few years Hungary accepted around two dozen Syrian refugees from Syria’s neighboring countries. The article noted that according to the UNHCR’s database Hungary accepted 11 people between 2012-2016, one of them Iranian, the rest of them Syrians. Simon said that in the framework of the coordinated resettlement programme the refugees are resettled from a country which already provides them shelter, but they are in danger either directly, or they can be deported back from the country they had to flee to save their lives.
