Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Friday discussed Ukraine’s education law and issues currently on the Council of Europe’s agenda with CoE Secretary-General Thorbjorn Jagland in Gothenburg, the PM’s press chief told MTI.
Bertalan Havasi noted that Hungary and Ukraine’s other neighbouring countries have voiced criticism of the education law banning post-primary-level education in minority languages saying that it severely undermines minority rights in that country.
Parties at the talks said it was a fundamental European principle that minorities should not be deprived of previously acquired rights and that this should also be enforced in the case of Ukraine’s new law.
Orban is in Gothenburg to attend a European Union social summit.
