In an open letter to head Guy Verhofstadt, leader of the ALDE group, the government spokesman, Zoltan Kovacs, wrote that Verhofstadt’s name “appears prominently on the leaked internal list of the Soros network, a list that names reliable allies in the European Parliament as supporters of Soros-backed causes.”
Kovacs accused Verhofstadt of doing the bidding of US billionaire George Soros by raising the issue of Hungary’s “National Consultation” public survey focusing on Soros at the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament. “In your recent Facebook rant, you demand that the EU ban Hungary’s national consultation on the pro-migration plan,” Kovacs said in a posting on the abouthungary.hu blog on Thursday.
“Criticizing Soros’ aggressively pro-immigration stance is not anti-Semitism as pointed out by significant members of the Jewish community, including Prime Minister Netanyahu,” Kovacs wrote.
Earlier, Cabinet office state secretary Csaba Domotor hit back at Guy Verhofstadt’s criticism, dismissing the group leader’s remarks as “part of a regular attempt” to pressurise Hungary.
