Hungary supports Romania’s OECD membership

The Hungarian government decided to support Romania’s bid for membership of the OECD, after the chairman of the Romanian government’s main party, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) promised to solve the situation of the schooling in Marosvasarhely (Targu Mures).

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto told Hungarian news agency MTI on Saturday that Liviu Dragnea held a phone call with Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and promised to solve the situation which led Hungary to veto Romania’s membership. Szijjarto added that they have consulted about the decision with Hunor Kelemen, chairman of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) too.

Hungarian government officials previously announced that Hungary is blocking Romania’s membership, because a Catholic school mainly attended by Hungarian students has been closed down in Marosvasarhely, and over a hundred Hungarian children were forced to start the school year at a different school.
